Krop Paper Scissors has a huge selection of Steam Punk art from companies like 7gypsies, Graphic45, and of course, everyone's "boyfriend" Tim Holtz. But what exactly is Steam Punk, why is it so fun to explore - how did it start and where is it going? Steam Punk is not a new art form by any means. The early roots began appearing around the late 1980's and there are two main branches today. One branch of Steam Punk is clearly for the sci-fi fanatic...the other is for the "art" fanatic. Steam Punk is best described as a melange of Victorian era art, life, and science blended into a visual art. Steam punk combines Victorian society with Victorian science in an all new and refreshing way. Even the popular website "Etsy.com" has a separate category for all things "Steam Punk". I suggest you go to that category on their site to get a trued "feel" for the art form. Think metal, lace, wood, flying things, pearls, all blended together to form a snapshot of an exciting time of growth and discovery in the world.
When you think of the Victorian era fashions images like corsets, long dresses, bustles, gloves, larger-than-life looming hats and hat boxes, pearls..... women were depicted as fair skin, rosy cheeked, long haired beauties with rounded features, curls abounding, graceful unused hands....(a very interesting contrast to today's women). Men were "gentlemen" in snappy suits, bowler hats, knickers, busy golfing or driving through the countryside with perfectly coifed hair and attire. Life was portrayed as leisurely. Blend with these images with all the scientific discoveries and technology of that time - "flying machines", hot air balloons, blimps, gears, steam engines and their power, early automobiles, pendulums, test tubes, electricity, basement chemistry labs.....the mad scientist busy at work.....and you get the basis for Steam Punk Art.
To followers and critics alike, Steam Punk has created a community of artist's working together to produce visual art with all these elements in a non-competitive environment. This is one art form that has no clear "leader", no clear "right or wrong" and really builds a strong sense of community within the art world. This truly is a rare element in the art world.
How do you put this altogether? Come in and let us show you how. 7gypsies offers a full line of "findings" like charms, chains, lobster claws, and rub-ons to create your own visual art - whether that be jewelry, home decor, wall art - we have many examples through out the store. The Graphic45 "Steam Punk Debutante" collection has ALL those elements in their beautiful 12 x 12 papers and embellishments. Tim Holtz and Ranger products offer a wide variety of metallic objects to distress, layer, alter, or to showcase your Steam Punk art.
There are no rules in Steam Punk art. True Steam Punk art combines all of the metal colors together, golds with copper, and silver, stones with pearls, lace with gears, fine silks with dragonflies, all things known, used, discovered and done in the Victorian era - the age of Scientific discovery and well into the Industrial Revolution. Steam Punk also embraces recycled items, found items, repurposed items into art. Old watch parts, cast off medallions, stray beads, lace or pearls, recycled wire, repurposed necklace and chain..there's room for it all.
If you are looking for a new way to express your "inner artist" or just want to play with some new mediums, come in and be part of our sense of community through art. I will be wearing Steam Punk art and jewelry when I work every Saturday for the next several months.....and believe me, if I can do it, anyone can do it!! Come check out the wonderful home decor pieces Candy Rosenberg has on display using Graphic45.
Thanks for your time - hope to see you soon - Katie
